Dear Mama,

I know you have been through this cosleeping journey with my big brothers, but I want you to know that I’m happy to be in your bed, now that you don’t have any doubts about sleeping together. It is nice having a mama who understands that sleeping together is what I want and treats this as natural.

I feel safe when I am next to you. You are warm and comforting. I feel the rhythm of your heartbeat and breathing. They are familiar to me from before I was born. My heart syncs with yours. I smell your sweet breath and match my inhales and exhales to yours.

I smell your milk and know that I can find comfort and food whenever I need them. I remember being so new after being born that I didn’t use my eyes to find your milk. I would nuzzle you until I could start the sweet flow. I remember the ecstasy would overwhelm me back into deep sleep.

Nursing at night is still one of my most pleasurable things. I like to put my feet and hands around your mama milk and just rest there, with my whole body luxuriating in the experience.

All night long we move with each other as one, just like when I was in your womb. We curve around each other, knowing where we are by our natures. My head rests on your arm. My hands and feet stroke your skin lazily as I dream.

I like to snuggle daddy sometimes. He has a different kind of warmth that comforts me. I sleep more peacefully knowing that both of my parents are here with me. He doesn’t share the daddy milk, but I will keep asking in case he ever changes his mind. Even while sleeping, I instinctually know to turn back to mama when I am hungry. I like to put my leg over daddy so I know he’s there while I’m snuggling mama.

On nights that I am sick or teething, I would not sleep if I didn’t have the steady company of mama overnight. Your presence allows me to go to sleep knowing you are always by my side. I can release my fear of falling asleep while sick and let my body do its work. If I wake, mama is there beside me to help ease my discomforts as I settle.

Now that I’m older, I like to fall asleep with my brothers as you read us books. My brothers and I spoon each other or hold hands as we drift off. It sets right any disagreements or annoyances we had during the day. It cements our bonds to each other in this special state where we are vulnerable.

After a couple of hours, I want to be with mama for the rest of the night. And my brothers still sleep with daddy most nights. I know the time will come when I need my own space to sleep at night, but I already know sleep is something safe and good for me.

And I know that I will always be welcome back into the big, safe bed whenever I want.

Love,

Your Snugglebug
